Sickness is very much a part
of a regular human being’s life. Despite the advances made in medicine over the
past several decades, diseases and illnesses are thriving. As doctors
and medical professionals look for cures for one illness
after another, other new diseases crop up. In Islam, through the Prophetic
Sunnah, we have forms of Ruqyah for healing, including Ruqyah containing
the recital of Surah al-Fatiha.
We need to remember that all forms of healing come
from Allah. Medicinal advances and the cures that are continually being
formulated are all with Allah’s permission. It is entirely permissible for us
to use worldly remedies as long as they aren’t harmful. However, different
forms of Ruqyah provide another kind of cure and are also recommended for
Muslims to utilize.
We need to remember that all forms of illnesses are
tests. They may contain something beneficial for us, but we don’t realize it. “And certainly, We
shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and
fruits, but give glad tidings to the patient ones.” (Quran 2:155)

Surah al-Fatiha as Ruqyah
There are multiple Hadith in Sahih Bukhari that describe
the permissibility of using Surah al-Fatiha as a form of Ruqyah. One of
the ways of performing this Ruqyah is by reciting Durood-e-Ibrahim three
times each to start and finish, with Surah al-Fatiha recited seven times
in between.
The meaning of Surah al-Fatiha: In the name of Allah,
the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. [All] praise is [due] to Allah,
Lord of the worlds - The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful, Sovereign
of the Day of Recompense. It is You we worship and You we ask for help. Guide
us to the straight path - The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor,
not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.
Other forms of Ruqyah
Put your hand at the location of the pain. Say:
“Bismillah (three times) A’udhoo billahee wa qudratihee minsharrimaa ajidu wa
uhadhiroo (seven times).” (Sahih Muslim). “In the name of Allah, I seek refuge
with Allah and with His Power from the evil that I find and that I fear.”
(For another person) “Adh hib al ba’s Rabb an naas,
washfi anta Shaafi, laa shifaa’a illaa shifaa ’uka shifaa ’an laa yughaadir
saqaman.” (Sahih Muslim). “O Lord of the people, grant him health, heal him,
for You are a Great Healer. There is no healing, but with Your healing Power,
one is healed, and illness is removed.”
“Rabbun Allahu al ladhee fis samaa ee taqad dasa smuka
amruka fis samaa ee wal ardhee kamaa rahmatuka fis samaa ee faj ’al rahmataka
fil ardhee, aghfir lanaa hoobanaa wa khathaa yaanaa anta Rabb ut tayyibbeena
anzil rahmatan min rahmatika wa shifa’an min shifa’ika ‘ala hadhal waja’i
fayabraa.” (Sunan Abi Dawud). “Our Lord is Allah Who is in the heavens; holy is
Your name, Your command reigns supreme in the heavens and the earth; as Your
mercy in the heaven, make Your mercy on the earth; forgive us our sins, and our
errors; You are the Lord of good men; send down mercy from Your mercy, and
remedy, and remedy from Your remedy on this pain so that it is healed up.”
(For another person) Seven times: “As alu Allahu al ’adheema
rabbal ’arshil ‘adheemee an yashfeeka illa ‘aafaahu Allahu min dhaalik al maradh.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud). “I ask Allah, the Mighty, the Lord of the mighty Throne, to
cure you.”
Benefits of Surah al-Fatiha
This surah is known as the ‘mother of the Quran.’
It is a vital part of a Muslim’s prayer. Without
al-Fatiha, a Muslim’s prayer is invalid. (Sahih al-Bukhari).
In another Hadith in Jami at-Tirmidhi, the Prophet (PBUH) proclaimed that Surah
al-Fatiha was something, the like of which had never been revealed in
the previous Holy Books.
Besides being a form of Ruqyah, Surah al-Fatiha is also a
form of a dua. After the initial verses praising Allah, the remainder of
the Surah contains some powerful invocations. In it, we ask Allah to guide
us to the straight path in Islam. There is only one correct path; thus the
6th verse clarifies that it’s the path of those on whom Allah bestowed
His bounties. Hence, this Surah is one of the most important things
we will ever learn in our lifetimes. May Allah give us the ability always to
remember and recite it.
